Three Days To A New Life

An Oxford woman who was out of work while caring for her sick mother has found a new job - caring for others.

Charlene Mullee, 26, had been searching for a job for 18 months and felt directionless when she went to A4e for help under the Government's new Work Programme.

She was caring for her mother, and also an elderly couple living opposite her - but never realised her caring nature would lead her to job success.

At her first meeting her advisor quickly spotted her potential and organised a Carer training package - which enthusiastic Charlene aced.

Producer Edward Bass to Chronicle Life of Serial Killer Belle Gunness

Producer Edward Bass’ Belle Gunness documentary begins principal photography.

"I have begun shooting a documentary on the life of Belle Gunness, as I had just finished penning the screenplay for the feature film," says Bass.

“It has been a while since I did a documentary, I produced Something Less Serious, which was on Its a Mad Mad Mad Mad World in the 90's. It was especially great working with the movie legends Jerry Lewis, Carl Reiner,and Mickey Rooney and late greats like Sid Cesar, Edie Adams, Milton Berle, Arnold Stang, Buddy Hackett, and Norman Fell.

Bass, who was a partner in a Stanley Kramer production, has continued to work on a Mad Mad world sequel with Mrs. Stanley Kramer, since Stanley always maintained sequel and remake rights to his films.

“Interestingly enough, while working with those comedians, who were often depressed, prepared me for the real world of interviewing serial killers and doing the a film about the life of Belle Gunness.”

Belle Gunness, is nothing like the Charlize Theron character in Monster, but like Sharon Stone in Basic Instinct, with a poison pen, rather than an ice pick. Before Craigslist and Facebook, she killed her victims the old fashioned way: using good old fashioned greed and sexual desire. It is believed that she netted almost $1 million dollars from murdering her unsuspecting lovers and disposing their bodies by feeding them to her hungry pigs.

Gunness was the “woman next door”, whose exterior hid a dark secret, a woman with keen entrepreneurial skills highly regarded among the business people in her town. She was a philanthropist who donated money to orphanages and civic projects. At night however she lived a lurid lifestyle of sex, drugs, and alcohol addiction that led to her eventual demise, and she was rumored to have take the lives of hundreds. As people lined up to watch Anthony Hopkins' Hannibal Lecter, Belle has the same appeal and more since she is real..

Alfred Hitchcock’s Shadow of A Doubt classic was a depiction of a small town Santa Rosa, complicit in a serial killer’s crimes. In Belle however, in contrast to the the events in Hitchcock's film, which were fiction, the events in La Porte were real. Here Belle Gunness became the most wealthy woman in Indiana because of her business acumen-- however, as we will see in the film, some of the towns folk’s most prominent citizens were complicit in her crimes. By cleverly absorbing each of her victim’s cash assets, she shrewdly invested their funds into her profitable hog farm, along with bribing or pulling the wool over the town's leading figures.

The town of La Porte has in their county historical society museum, pieces of the Belle Gunness casket that was recently exhumed in an effort to finally determine whether it was Belle who died in a suspicious fire, or someone else. The results were inconclusive and we have joined investigators who are searching for living relatives in Norway. The mystery continues...

Bass is currently set to direct two upcoming films he has penned, including the Belle Gunness story and is executive producer with producing partner Christopher Beatty of Chlorine and Chronicle and James C. Herrmann, with Director Jay Alaimo who Bass launched with Slingshot. His other producing partners have included Sir Anthony Hopkins (Bobby), Kevin Spacey, and Guillermo Del Toro.

Bass has also launched a syndicated column nicknamed, "The Column", is quickly becoming infamous for his satirical “IF I WERE PRESIDENT...” tagline beginning each column. The course, which will be delivered by Apps for Good, has been developed and designed by Techlightenment, an Experian company that develops social media social technology. This latest course is designed to offer young people the chance to learn how to build Facebook applications which have a positive social impact on their life and others around them.

Applications are now being sought for the first scheme, which will run for six weeks from October 17th 2011 at the A4e Brixton Vox, a dedicated vocational training centre for young people who are unemployed or out of education.

The course will be taught by some of the UK’s leading Technology names and attendees can expect to learn the basics of web development like HTML 5 as well as more advanced coding such as PHP for more complex apps and SQL for databases. Participants will be guided through how to design, create, test, release, evaluate and maintain their own Facebook application before presenting their social applications to industry experts during a graduation ceremony in November.

Previous experience in coding is not necessary but applicants will need to demonstrate that they are passionate about using social media to solve social problems and ideally have some basic html knowledge. Texas was among the last states in the United States to be affected by recession, and certainly the first to bounce back. In fact, Texas stands in the top ten lists of the best places for business and careers, conducted by Forbes. Texas has indeed been adding jobs faster when compared to other cities in the country. But what’s the future of the Texas housing market? Mike Kergosien speaks about the housing market in Texas.

Even as several states became victim to the housing bubble, Texas remained largely unscathed. The conservative approach of the state that restricted mortgage borrowing to 80 per cent of the appraised value has a large role to play in this.

For some time now, Texas has been in the centre of a long term process of an employment shift. Low cost of wages, relatively cheaper housing and low cost of living in Texas have been a contributory factor. This has also resulted in Texas being voted as the preferred city for relocation. Those who relocate do not mind that the wages that they earn are far less than the wages they earn elsewhere, because houses here are far more affordable than they are throughout the country.

The state’s oil reserves have also played a major part in the steady employment rates. A few years ago, a barrel of oil was sold for $25. Over the last two years oil prices have risen and stayed steady at over $80 a barrel. Technological breakthrough has resulted in the opening up of several oil and gas fields all over the state.

Another factor that has played to the advantage of the state is exports. Trade between the United States and Mexico has grown up with factories in El Paso working overnight to keep up with demands.

Texas sits wise largely because of its lessons learnt from the recession it experienced in the late 1980’s. Governors who followed this period worked with business leaders to diversify the economy. The recession also resulted in strict legislation to control the mortgage market.

Career Centre saves G4S £1m in first year

International security solutions firm G4S is tracking savings of more than £1m on UK recruitment since launching its Global Career Centre in November last year.

Head of resourcing Colin Minto told Recruiter that the aim was to move to a direct resourcing model in the “truest” sense of the word. “That is empowering our frontline supervisors, managers and HR teams to directly recruit themselves,” he says.

“Technology is the driving force of the modern resourcing strategy and the most important element is the corporate career centre.”

Following the launch of the Global Career Centre, G4S is rolling out local versions to its UK operating businesses, as well as in Australia and New Zealand, Africa and the Netherlands.

“The idea is to capture local traffic, local Google and local web content and aggregate all of it back to the Global Career said Minto. The centre includes a multi-lingual job board in 30 languages and a single global searchable database for all G4S hiring managers. G4S has more than 635,000 employees and is one of the world’s biggest private-sector employers, operating in 125 countries.

The system integrates multiple applicant tracking systems (ATS) and an online corporate career centre that provides all of the facilities necessary to take a candidate from attraction through to appointment. The backbone of the system is the talent management platform TribePad, developed by technology company Talent On View, which sits between an ATS and a corporate website.

It allows organisations to build their own social networks and talent communities and allows a range of apps to be run from it, including job posting to all available channels including social media, semantic searching to help match candidates with jobs, and CV parsing to create candidate profiles. It also features a community jobseeker area in which candidates can access video, learning content, resources and forums.

Minto also worked with specialist online recruitment providers Kaonix, Monster TMS and RecruitActive in developing the career centre.

Talent on View CEO Lisa Scales says the company is in talks with global businesses from the pharmaceutical, FMCG, retail and media industries regarding TribePad.

“They are all looking to consolidate their social recruiting activities while underpinning their direct hiring strategy and making cost efficiencies,” she said.

Website Keeps Diabetes Patients On Track

Data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) “2011 National Diabetes Fact Sheet” puts the number of adults and children with diabetes in the U.S. at an astounding 25.8 million, with another 79 million teetering on the edge of the disease having a precursor condition called “prediabetes”. That is one of every three Americans. Diabetes and prediabetes are defined by a flaw in the body’s natural capacity to utilize its primary source of fuel-- the sugar, glucose-- resulting in excessive levels circulating in the bloodstream. High blood glucose levels contribute to serious “complications” of diabetes including heart attack and stroke, kidney failure, severe infections and limb amputation, vision loss and blindness, digestive and sexual dysfunction, and premature death.

“Diabetes doesn’t have to equal poor health though”, says Toby Smithson, Registered Dietitian (RD), Certified Diabetes Educator (CDE), and founder of DiabetesEveryDay.com. “Diabetes can be a manageable condition, but challenging responsibilities fall squarely on the patient. It’s called self-management.” Smithson would certainly know the challenges intimately, having managed her own diabetes successfully for more than 40 years with no hint yet of those insidious “complications”.

Self-management means acting personally to keep blood sugar levels as close to normal as possible with a combination of regular medical care, medication (sometimes insulin injections), frequent monitoring of blood sugar levels, eating a healthy diet with particular attention to carbohydrates, and getting regular physical activity. Following through with these personal responsibilities consistently clearly works to preserve health, but it’s estimated less than 10% of people with diabetes meet recommended goals for their ABC’s…A1C (effective blood sugar control), Blood pressure and Cholesterol.

So how can people successfully manage their diabetes? “Controlled studies almost always show that ‘intensive lifestyle intervention’ brings marked improvements in these key health indicators, greatly reducing the risks of diabetes complications”, says Smithson. “But in our real world a person with diabetes may go for months between visits with physicians or dietitians or educators. The lifestyle can be complicated, time consuming, frustrating, and lacking in short term positive feedback, so many simply lose their daily connection with diabetes management against life’s other demands.”

She explains, “I founded DiabetesEveryDay.com to provide accurate information about diabetes and diabetes management, of course. But more importantly, I want to keep people with diabetes interested in, and connected to, this crucial part of their life.
